Why Yoga & Meditation?
According to various organizations, approximately 1.5 million Canadians regularly practice yoga in one of its many forms—meditation being one of them. Yoga involves directed breathing while participants move their bodies into specific poses. This voluntary breathing can increase activity in the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to a decrease in emotional arousal (Sovik, 2000). Consistent with this view, college students who performed directed breathing had lower levels of physical and mental stress than did control participants.
Yoga & The Immune System
Yoga may help your immune system. When compared to people in a sample relation condition (nature walks and soft music), people who performed yoga had greater changes in gene expression in immune cells circulating in the blood stream (Qu et al., 2013).
The Importance of Breath
The average person takes approximately 21,000 breaths per day and the practice of breathing is a powerful way to increase conscious control over involuntary systems. Through the awareness of each inhalation and exhalation, the breath moves freely between outer and inner worlds, so that a whole new world can begin to open up from within.
Why Meditation?
Trained meditators showed a larger decrease in activity in areas of the frontal lobes related to the “self” (the medial prefrontal cortex) than did novices. They also showed increased activity in areas related to the perception of one’s bodily states. These results suggest that meditation does in fact help us separate ourselves from our own narratives and live in the present moment.
Meditation & Physical Health
Meditation helps the practitioner control his or her physiological responses, thereby decreasing stress and preventing health problems such as cardiovascular disease.

“This course was a gamechanger for me! I had just began my yoga journey in Sept of this year. After attending some of Alex’s Yin yoga classes I decided to enroll in the YTT program as I thought it would be a great opportunity to deepen my practice and if I felt called to it become a facilitator.
From wealth of experience from the facilitators, incredibly welcoming and inviting environment, relaxed atmosphere and the very well balance between theory and practical learning approach, lead to this program far exceeding my expectations. Beyond that, the friendships that were forged within our group, the incredible atmosphere that was present, as well as the structure and delivery of this program resulted in profound personal growth for myself beyond my practice. I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this experience and I will most definitely look to attend any further training offered.”
“I really love that YTT is split into modules allowing us time to put into practice what we learned before jumping into the next module. The wisdom and knowledge you give in class is like no other and won’t find anywhere else and although this is my first YTT I know the caliber of what is offered is incomparable. I love the tips and tricks and tidbits you give like start with heart opening poses for Kundalini rising and complete sequences with hips, heart head. Having done yoga for over a decade its easy to forget how yoga could be challenging for newcomers like 3 min poses is a long time and they won’t lose their eyes which cones naturally to me. Only feedback I have is any good questions coming from students it’ll be good to repeat so when we watch the recording we can hear the question in relation to your answer. You make training fun and the community of students become friends. You also combine coaching along with your teachings and you give visuals like the sword which is helpful as I’m a visual learner. What I love most is all your yoga practices are different each time keeping us on our toes. Excited for what’s to come next weekend!”
